Being environmentally-friendly isn't just about buying green, it's about staying green.  That means using products that are non-toxic and free from chemicals when cleaning your wood floors. You probably already have them right in your pantry.

There are many environmentally friendly cleaning products on the market, and our floor care experts can advise you on the best way to clean hardwood flooring. Meanwhile, here are some things you might use:

Using hydrogen peroxide

This is safe for both people and animals and, used correctly, it will not damage wood floors. It has antibacterial and antiviral properties so it doesn’t just clean, but also sanitizes. It cleans pet stains or mud; the reason it’s sometimes difficult to remove stains on hardwood floors is that they are so porous. The stains get absorbed through those little holes, but the hydrogen peroxide pulls out the stains.

Don’t be worried about any bleaching effect. As long as you follow the formula we give in great detail, use caution and don’t let the solution be overly strong, you’ll be fine. If you have very dark floors, you should check with a floor care expert before doing anything.

The formula is as follows: One bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide.  (Use only 3%, not anything higher.)  Put it in a spray bottle, so no one area gets oversaturated.  Spray lightly, wipe with a microfiber cloth. Your floors will go back to their original luster.

What about vinegar?

Yes, but if it’s only mixed with water.  If you try to mix it with hydrogen peroxide (i.e, the "more is better" mentality), it will create a highly acidic substance that will truly damage your floors. The solution is ½ cup white distilled vinegar to one-gallon warm water.  Wring the mop well so it's only damp; remember, excess water can damage floors so you don’t want any liquid to get between the joists. When you’re done, wipe well so the floor is thoroughly dry.
